ACTION 4 OF 16

How to Show “Published” and “Updated” Dates so AI Sees Your Page as Fresh

SHORT ANSWER

Show visible publish and update dates on articles and key pages, and make sure they match your markup. Change the update date only after real content edits. Google treats changing the date without edits as manipulation.

Why it matters

AI answers favor fresher pages. Google asks for visible, accurate dates. It also explicitly calls updating the date without substantial changes a sign of content written for search engines.

Step by step

  1. On articles and key pages, add a visible line: “Published: March 12, 2026 · Updated: October 4, 2026.”

  2. Pass the same dates in datePublished and dateModified markup. They must match the visible dates.

  3. Set up your CMS so “Updated” changes manually after content edits, not on every save.

  4. Check the page source. There should be one pair of dates, with no conflict between the theme, a plugin, and the markup.

Template: Visible line and markup

<p class="dates">Published: March 12, 2026 · Updated: October 4, 2026</p>

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Article",
  "headline": "Article Title",
  "datePublished": "2026-03-12",
  "dateModified": "2026-10-04",
  "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Author Name", "url": "https://yoursite.com/authors/name" }
}
</script>

How to know it’s done

Every article shows publish and update dates, they match the markup, and “Updated” changes only after real edits.

Common mistake

Automatically setting today’s date on every save. Google explicitly calls changing the date without substantial changes a sign of content written for search engines.

How to check that it works

Check the source of a few pages. Each should have one pair of dates, identical in the visible text and the markup. Then watch whether AI cites updated pages more often than old ones.

If you use Dabudai, Top Pages shows which of your pages AI cites right now. Compare them with their last update dates.

Questions

Can I just update the date on every page?

No. Without content changes, it doesn’t help and can hurt. Google treats it as manipulation.

What date should I show if the page hasn’t changed in years?

The honest one. Better yet, update the content (prices, examples, numbers) and then change the date.

Do I need date markup?

It’s recommended. datePublished and dateModified should match the visible dates. But markup without visible dates doesn’t work.
